If you want to improve your writing skills, but don't have the time or means to attend a conference or take a course, then online writing courses may be the answer!

Educational institutions have recognized that people need flexibility, whether because of work or family commitments, or because they don’t live close enough to a university or other organization to take courses in person. Through online education, many people are completing courses, diplomas, even degrees. A short course on one aspect or genre of writing can improve your talents and help you make more money.

Advantages of Online Writing Classes

Online courses provide a written record not only of the lectures, but also of the class discussions. All of the course material is available online anytime you want to go back and review it. You have time to read other people’s ideas and consider them before replying. Even class discussions can be a chance to work on your writing skills—try being as clear and concise as possible.

Many writers claim to be introverts—they like working with words but have a harder time working with people. Sometimes it is easier to give critiques in writing, rather than in a face-to-face setting. Yet writers also need interaction with others. Online courses provide the best of both of these—you converse via the computer, getting and giving feedback, discussing writing, yet having the time to form your thoughts and express your ideas in writing.

Finding Online Creative Writing Courses

Check what courses universities and colleges within your state are offering. If you are part of a writer’s group, ask other writers what courses they have taken online and what they would recommend. Many writer’s organizations also offer short online writing courses on specific topics.

Google online writing classes, but research carefully. Know what sort of class you want to take (e.g., credit or non-credit) and how much you are willing to pay. Find out how long the course runs for and how it is offered (e.g., via email, yahoo groups, WebCT).

The costs for online courses may range from nothing to $500 and more. Free online writing courses are usually work-at-your-own-pace without an instructor. If you simply want the information and are able to give yourself deadlines, this may work for you. The benefit of having an instructor is receiving feedback on your assignments and perhaps even recommendations for possible markets. The instructor will also set deadlines and hold you to them.

Compare what is offered in each online course with what they charge, and decide what you are able to pay and how much you need the help.

Navigating Online Writing Courses

If you have never taken an online course before, give yourself a bit of extra time when the course starts to figure out how it works. Online classes are offered in several different formats, but they are fairly easy to navigate with a bit of time. Usually the instructors will provide clear instructions on how they are posting information and how you should respond to it.

So what are you waiting for? Get online and start learning today!
